Hi there....I hope someone can help! We fell in love with the speckled Sussex a few years ago after getting a single chick by accident. It took a couple of years to find ANY more Sussex--never mind high quality birds. So...I have gathered what I could find. I have two roosters very different from each other both with their own problems and I gave them each hens that I hoped could balance them out a bit. I now have 20 cockerels and 15 pullets to choose from. Most of my 11 hens are only a year old and I may keep some of them as well. The problem is I don't know who to keep! The breed is quite complicated with their tricolour feathers and I'm stuck on the basics. I should have started with something simple. But I don't want to give up now--and my husband would have a fit after all the work and money we've put in. Any suggestions? Is there anyone in my area who would like to see my birds? I can take pictures of them if anyone would like to take a look at them? I am considering entering one or two in the show in Milton just for feedback--but would that be frowned upon if they are not SQ? Thanks for any help.... Leighanne

I was just browsing and saw Don Emke mentioned as a helpful contact for the speckled Sussex. Most of my flock comes from him! And one of my roosters I bought from him. That makes me feel a bit more hopeful for my birds. And all the more reason to not give up on them! Can anyone suggest any books for me? I need help in recognizing faults.

Well, it would definitely start with a standard of perfection. There is all kinds of information in there. I find the scale of points very helpful for determining which faults I should be the most concerned about. Take them to a show. The worst that can happen is the judge will write a little DQ on the tag. You can meet people with experience in your breed or similar breeds and get some opinions on the birds... And make good friends along the way.
