Gang, What preds give the you the most problems and what is everyone doing/using to pred proof?
free ranging your birds in the forest or not locking them up at night doesn't count.
I am spanking coons like crazy right now..mainly females and at our mink ranch we had an issue with coons reaching into pens and nabbing kits....since last Friday at the ranch we have "relocated" 10 coons and at my place in the last 2 weeks have seen 8 coons find new homes.
Lets begin...

I shot 1 skunk in April, and that's all I've seen around. We (my uncle and I) have had something disturbing the nests and have lost a couple of birds but it has quieted down.
I've been setting all my live traps but they're both being cleaned right out... but no birds are being killed, so we're all good.

Darren I have something living in my barn making big holes into each of my pens.I'm thinking it's a rat but I've put rat poison down with no luck, I tried putting a live trap down with fish in it for bait but no go. Any suggestions on what to use for bait?

have you lost birds or eggs?
rats are very clever, and can be difficult to trap. have you confirmed rats though?
ive had success with glue traps covered by dark boxes against a wall. rats will instinctively travel snug against walls, and are naturally curious to holes that are dark. something to tray

Not a confirmed rat, just don't know what it is,usually leaves the chickens alone but I had 2 guinea hens die with bites on the neck. I have had some chickens get out through the hole it made in their pen I'm thinking it was chasing them. Will try the sticky trap, thanks.

I have had problems with Coons and minks over the years!!
Had a close call this year. Came home late and forgot to close the door to my young birds. Walked down to shut it and there were three young coons just going in. Managed to scare 2 out the other climbed up and went into the eave. Couldn't get to it. So I had to relocate a bunch of young birds to my other building. Three days later it broke through the soffate in the night. Then moved the young birds back in!! They didn't get any thank God!!
Wasn't so lucky last year. The coons managed to work the latch on my barn door got in and killed 75 birds. Young, old and in between. It was a huge loss!! I fixed the latch and put a lock on the door!
Couple of years ago I Live trapped 8 raccoons in 7 days!!
Use welded wire for all out door pens! They can tear through Chicken wire if they want too!!
