I have a black wyandotte cockerel that has excellent type and comb, good leg colour and tail carriage, but is showing a small amount of maroon on his wings shoulders. As far as I can tell from the standard, a limited amount of white is acceptable, but any red is a disqualification. Is this true? I think I will bring him out anyways to get an opinion on him, but I was wondering how strict this rule is. Dave.

I just looked over my standard Dave, no where does it say that red/maroon is a DQ. Personally I have bred birds where this color has come up in the past. There is more than one way to look at this situation, one- If he is that good of a bird, keep him, show him and let the cards fall where they may. Second-keep the bird as a breeder, making sure that you record all breedings so you know where and if this comes up again, you can trace it. Cull the bird and keep breeding to get what you want. Personally I chose the third option, I am interested to hear what more experienced people have to say?..... Good luck Stephane

In my 2010 APA standard on pg 34 under disqualifications, Color Plumage: (a) All barred, black, and mottled varieties 1. Red or yellow.
I'm pretty sure that means its a DQ. I just don't know how much that rule is enforced. I still plan on bringing him out.
As for breeding, the aba book on wyandotte bantams suggests That a little red in the plumage of cockerels goes along with yellow legs and green shine in pullets. This guy was kind of the best of the worst though... He ended up looking good but there was no consistency with his siblings. Most of them have been cut for a whole range of defects. I was just hoping this guy would do something on the show bench, but its looking like he isn't good for that either.

Dave... Pg.48 of the 2010 APA standard gives you the DQ's for the Black wyandotte, pg. 34 gives you the description of the black color pattern. I would love to have someone with more experience weigh in on this subject.....

Both page 48 and page 34 apply to Black Wyandottes. Red is indeed a disqualification in any black colour pattern unless red is a colour or breed requirement. Hope this clears this topic up.
