Just our of curiosity , wondering how everyones breeding season has gone tis year. For me it was a light year... as I usually hatch 300- 350 + ... but more like 225 this year. Had decent luck with my project birds ( LF Moderns ) with 67 , Cornish 22 , Silkies 41, and Modern bantams around 95 mind you the culling began early and there are not near that many around now. I also with out much effort manged to get 5 aylesbury ducks out,but so far no egyptian geese ( think this is still a possiblity ) . From what I hear in most circles water fowl were off this year. I do see great promise in what I did manage to get out from a quality stand point.. but it helps in my mind when the culling starts and the lessers are eliminated early . Troy

Well my breeding season went pretty good with the japs and Brahmas and Dutch... Mark and I ended up getting 120 or so Black Japs 60-80 Black tailed buffs and I had one pair of BTW and managed 20 chicks from them. Dutch I only wanted 15 chicks got that on 20 eggs and Brahmas well they were a different story. But got 3 awesome young ones from them. As for the japs the leg length wasnt a bad as I was thinking it would be the issue we had was the colour on the BTB and head structure but did get some nice ones from them. they still are works in progress. But the overall qaulity will be seen this fall. lol

This is my first season breeding, and all things considered I think I have done pretty good. I hatched around 70 black Wyandotte bantams. Only three hens ended up laying for me, and I had significant problems getting the chicks out of the eggs with only about a half of the eggs that made it full term hatching. I thought it was my incubator, but one of my hatches I tossed in24 eggs from a friend and 24 eggs from my birds. 21 of his hatched, and 8 of mine. It took me six hatches over four months to get the numbers I was looking for. On the good side though, I have 10 or so from the first three hatches that look pretty decent. The type on some of the pullets is very good, but they are a bit big, and all of them have dark shading on the shanks and toes. I have a few really nice cockerels with good type and colour, but some hollows in the combs. I don't know if those might fill in with age? One of my First pairings ended up with no consistency except for pinched tails so I plan on culling the lot of them. Because my first pairing was outcrosses, I got lots of weird stuff popping out. I have fluff between the toes on two, one with a roach back, a couple with no leaders. Four birds had yellow combs when hatched, then developed crow heads, soft long narow pullet feathers, pullet combs and wattles, yellow legs and cockerel type. They looked terrible so I culled them all. I have another couple with yellow combs in the last few hatches and I suspect they will be the same. These are the only "pullets" that have yellow legs though. I have so much to learn and I am growing the birds out a lot more than needed just so I can see it. The tails look good on the majority, except for the ones with the pinched tails, and it looks like I have a cock line as far as colour goes. I am thinking I may need to pick up another bird to hope for some lighter legs in the next generation. I don't really see a way to improve this feature with the birds I have. The in crosses from the last three clutches are just starting to moult and it looks like I have lots of defects there as well. Some look pretty promising and I think that with what I learned from the first batch, I can cull these ones much earlier. There are lots of leader problems and I have a few wry tails in this round that I can deal with right away to make the numbers more manageable. I'm really enjoying the process, but I wish I knew some people local to me that I could talk to about them. I guess I will just have to bing a bunch out to shows to get some opinions.

Troy,
I hatched out about 25 Pilgrims and half a dozen Toulouse this year. The season seemed late however, very good grazing for the youngsters.

We did OK. Hatched about 300 Btms (Silkies & Moderns) & 15 Toulouse. Btms came easy, though geese didn't lay well & fertility was low... luckily they hatched well.--JC

I was very pleased with this year's hatching season, over 100 RIR standards, 100 black wyandotte bantams, around 60 white wyandotte bantams and 35 pekins. I had some projects in waterfowl, I was able to hatch a few birds but either quality was poor or they died. Cheers Stephane

Things went well here also. I hatched 180 speckled sussex, 120 runners (various colors, project birds) and 40 cayugas. I put over 100 cayuga eggs in the incubator but unfortunately they weren't fertile until early April. It was definitely a learning experience, hatching that many birds.
Cheers, Woodsy
