I'm looking forward to OPB, but I'm taking a small team to the royal as well. Maybe next year I will have to do a trip to the states. I don't think I have put enough selection influence into my birds to have them ready to go to the states yet.

With familly life and such......lol.....I attended as many shows as I could this year. I brought out a large string and it took alot of time to get all the birds where I wanted them. Like you guys I will attend OPB, but maybe with less birds than the summer shows. No shows state side this year, as the 100th anniversary show for the ABA will be next year, I do not want to miss that.

The boys and I did our club show, and Colwyn. I wish we could go to OPB but hubby doesn't understand "the show thing" and feels it is too expensive this year (we had to cut out the Royal too). Any advice on how to change hubby's mind (keep it clean! ) would be greatly appreciated

Farmgirl, I am feeling that if hubby sees your hard work and dedication to the hobby he may get it. The other side is this, if you only attend a few shows within a certain area you generally will see the same competition each time. Why not broaden the horizens and show at as many shows are permitted to see where indeed your stock may need improving or what other breeders are working with? Maybe try that side with hubby also..?
Just a thought.
SOme of my best friends I have met through poultry also, wanted to add that.

I agree Darren! Going to Colwyn sure opened his eyes to some of the things I was trying to impress upon him about the advantages of "changing leagues". He no longer thinks I need professional help for the amount of time spent conditioning and "putting up" our birds. That's one improvement! We made some great new poultry friends with such vast experience and gorgeous animals. They were so good to take the time with our boys,5 & 8, and made available to them some of their top placing birds to strengthen our breeding pens. Even if I can just talk him into being spectators for the day it wold be great, we are about three hours from Milton.
He sure was proud though when Alan (8) took Res.Champ. Bantam by a Junior and Champion Bantam Cochin by a Junior at Colwyn. Jacob (5) got best display in the silkies!
Not sure if the birds would even be in good enough condition.....we are experiencing some strangely extended and late moults!
I'll keep working on him!

Funnyfarmgirl, I'm glad to hear of your great experience at Colwyn. Its great to hear how supportive those breeders have been to help your boys have a positive experience. And then the snowball effect - helping your husband to understand and accept that this hobby is important to his family. It may take some time, but sounds like he's coming around. My hubby and I have finally come to accept that we just have different interests. I love breeding and showing my chickens; he enjoys hunting trips. We both support each other's hobbies, but we don't do them together. That's what holidays are for.

I agree with all the above statements, my wife and I also have different hobbies......BUT we both respect them. My wife is happy to see that all my hard work pays off and I am happy to see her succeed in hers. At the same time, we sit down and discuss at the beginning how many week-ends we will be away from the house and also the costs that may be incurred. I help pay for good part of my trips by selling a few birds ahead of time, I also find a buddy to travel with. As for the friends I have made at the shows......They have become some of the most important part of my life, almost like family. Hope this helps Stephane
